FAQs

How much do edits cost?

Prices vary according to the intensity of the edit required and your ideal timeline. Prices are often provided alongside the free sample edit, once our editors have a better sense of your project.

How does the editing process work?

The editing process will vary from project to project depending on your needs, but most projects begin with a complimentary sample edit. After sending us a short sample of the piece you’d like edited, we will return approximately half a page to you so you can get a sense of our editing style. We can also advise on what editing package might be best-suited for your work at this point. At this point, we can also negotiate a timeline for the edit to be completed and finalize the price.

What do the different types of editing mean and which one should I choose?

“Editing” can mean many different things, from catching spelling errors, making suggestions on how to re-write a convoluted sentence, and even identifying where the main thrust of your argument isn’t sufficiently supported yet. Your document may need only minor revisions, or deeper engagement with your argument. Typically, there are four levels of editing, though the boundaries between them can be fluid.

Stylistic editing, sometimes referred to as line editing, looks at the document line-by-line to identify ways to improve the text’s clarity, flow, readability, and tone, while maintaining the author’s unique voice.

Copy editing flags issues of grammar, accuracy, consistency, and obvious issues of clarity.

Proofreading is the last stage before publication, where the final document undergoes a read-through to identify spelling mistakes and grammatical errors that are necessary for the author to change.

Structural or Developmental editing is the most intensive type, where the editor works closely with the author to develop the text and shape the organization of the text and its argument.
